RAP History

In 1972, a group of concerned Genesee County Residents recognized the need for a hotline. A training program for volunteer listeners was designed and implemented. With phone lines manned, Regional Action Phone, Inc. (RAP) was born.

In May of 1986, due to the overwhelming response to the hotline service, RAP became a twenty-four hour Crisis and Suicide Intervention, Information and Referral line.

RAP’s growth didn't end there. In 1994, Orleans County was added to the coverage area and in 2004 Wyoming County. Residents of Genesee, Orleans and Wyoming Counties as well as the surrounding area are now able to benefit from the many services RAP has to offer. There are 800 numbers attached to all incoming lines to eliminate any toll-calling barriers.  RAP has teams with the ASSIST Language line that allows access to over 150 different languages and dialects. To meet the needs of the hearing impaired community, RAP has a TTY machine and a working relationship with the New York State Relay Service.  RAP now has 14 incoming lines.

Regional Action Phone, Inc. (RAP) is a private, non-profit 501 (c) 3 Corporation. We are Members/Associates of the Alliance of Information & Referral Systems, American Association of Suicidology, New York State Alliance of Information and Referral Systems, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Genesee County Interagency, Orleans County Human Services Council, Genesee County Mental Health Sub-Committee & Orleans County Mental Health Sub-Committee. RAP is a United Way agency.
